The Research on the Steel Used in Button Bits - 10/12/2013

With the rapid development of industry and the improvement of technique, as well as peopleˇŻs much more concerns on the drilling cost, all industries put forward with much higher demands and requirements on the classification, performance and the quality of drilling products, which is an important reason why many rock drill bits manufacturers are concerning on researching the technique of drilling techniques.
Drilling bits is a tool directly used in drilling rocks. Drilling bits mainly includes tapered chisel bits, thread button bits, down the hole drilling bits, rotary drilling bits, roller bits, drag bits and so on. Here we may introduce the button bits.
According to the way of connection, the button bits can be divided into tapered button bits and thread button bits. Tapered button bits are just as a substitution for chisel bits to drilling in small holes or low-depth rock holes. In such a case, the producing technique is relatively easy and the producing requirement is not so high. However, thread button bits are mostly equipped with hydraulic drill rigs to finish big drilling projects. When there is something wrong happens to the drilling bits, there must has a big influence on the drilling process. As a result, the producing requirements of thread button bits are much higher comparing with the tapered button bits.
Although the quality of thread button bits has been quietly improved nowadays, while comparing with some famous drilling companies in western countries, we still need a further improvement on the producing technique of thread button bits. Only after that, the thread button bits can be best used in the drilling industries. One of the ways to improve the technique is reflected on the drilling bitsˇŻ tooth fixing way.
The tooth fixing way has gone through three stages. In the past, the welding process is widely used, because at that time, the producing technique is not so advanced, and welding technique is easy to operate. But this producing technique has many disadvantages, for example, the welding scar is always left, which affects the appearance of drilling bits; the service life of the bits is short. Later, another fixing way appears, it is the way that fixes the button bits through the impact of outer force. This way has a higher producing efficiency and the serve life of bits is much longer, but the bits have low stability. Nowadays, the mostly used fixing way is heat treatment process and this process is easy to handle. Under the circumstance of heat, the material has higher plasticity, strength and hardness. And the material should have the characteristic of abrasive resistance. Of course, there are also other requirements for the steel material used in drilling bits just as follows: 1) the hardness of steel should reach 40~ 50HRC; 2) the higher physical performance to ensure the tooth fixing ability; 3) has higher stability and producing ability. In the present time, the optimal material at home and abroad is Cr-Ni type steel. Based on the mechanical property, and abrasive resistance of drilling material, Q45N iCr1Mo1VA steel is highly recommended to be used in heat treatment process. Many chemical elements contained in the material, providing the drilling bits with better performance and quality, for instance, the carbon element helps to improve the hardness of bits; silicon element is conducive to the abrasive resistance of drilling bits.
